Beyond Angkor Wat — Hidden Temples You Can’t Miss
Date Published
While Angkor Wat, Bayon, and Ta Prohm (the "Tomb Raider" temple) grab the headline spotlight, the Angkor Archaeological Park spans over 400 square kilometers filled with hundreds of ancient monuments. Taking time to venture slightly off the beaten path rewards you with intricate artistry, peaceful jungle atmospheres, and far fewer tour groups.
Here are three exceptional temples beyond the main circuit that every traveler should include in their itinerary.
1. Banteay Srei — The Jewel of Khmer Art
Located roughly 25 kilometers north of the main Angkor group, Banteay Srei (meaning "Citadel of Women") was built in the 10th century from fine pink sandstone. Because of this unique stone, the temple features the most detailed and delicate relief carvings found anywhere in Cambodia.
- Why Visit: The miniature scale and exquisite carving depth look almost like woodcrafts.
- Best Time: Early morning (8:00 AM) or late afternoon when the warm sunlight highlights the pink hues.
2. Beng Mealea — The True Jungle Ruin
If you have ever dreamt of feeling like an explorer discovering a forgotten temple lost in the wilderness, Beng Mealea is for you. Located about 60 kilometers east of Siem Reap, this sprawling 12th-century temple remains largely unrestored, wrapped in thick roots, moss, and fallen stone blocks.
- Why Visit: Wooden walkways lead you over crumbling courtyards and through arched corridors overrun by ancient trees.
- Travel Tip: Combine Beng Mealea with a trip to Banteay Srei or the Kulen Mountain waterfall for a full day out.
3. Koh Ker — The Seven-Tiered Pyramid City
Farther north in Preah Vihear province sits Koh Ker, a former capital of the Khmer Empire established in the 10th century under King Jayavarman IV. The star attraction here is Prasat Prang, a imposing 36-meter-tall, 7-tiered step pyramid that looks strikingly similar to Mayan architecture.
Travel Recommendation: Renting an air-conditioned private vehicle is the most comfortable way to visit these outer temples in a single day loop.
